BMC workers and engineers in Mumbai have threatened to go on strike if the government does not reverse its decision to amend sections 332 and 353 of the IPC and the investigation agencies do not stop ‘harassing’ them during investigations into pandemic irregularities. The workers’ concern is that the proposed amendments will reduce their protection as public servants. Earlier, they raised their concerns regarding harassments faced during investigations. Their argument is that their work is facing unnecessary scrutiny since it was appreciated by the government and the Supreme Court.
In pursuance of the above concerns, various BMC workers’ and engineers’ associations have decided to go on a strike from August 23 if the state government does not roll back the proposals and halts the investigations.
Section 332 deals with voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty and section 353 deals with assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty. Though the state informed the assembly that it would be amending the sections, neither of the houses has taken up any discussion on an amendment yet. However, the associations made their announcement at a joint press conference.
