After demanding his unpaid wages in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, a Dalit worker named Rinku Manjhi was brutally attacked. Rinku had gone to his employers before Durga Puja to demand two days' pay, but he was violently attacked. He complained that three men, Ramesh Patel, Arun Patel, and Gaurav Patel, had stopped him on his way home, severely beaten him, spat on him, and, in a particularly humiliating act, one of them had even peed on him. Although the assault and caste-based remarks were proven, Superintendent of Police Vidya Sagar said that there was still no proof to support the allegations of spitting and peeing. An investigation is still on, he told reporters, adding that the case was recorded on October 8 at the Bochahan police station under case number 291/24. At the time of reporting, police were conducting raids to locate the accused, but no arrests had been made in spite of the allegation. Rakesh Kumar Yadav, the officer-in-charge, gave his word that "we are actively working to apprehend the suspects." The victim claimed to have received death threats after the complaint, which made him too afraid to go back home. |
