Union Labour Ministry seeks report from Tamil Nadu over reports of married women denied work at Foxconn plant

The government of India looked into allegations that married women were not hired at Foxconn's iPhone manufacturing in Tamil Nadu due to discrimination. Foxconn is a significant Apple supplier. The Equal Remuneration Act of 1976, which forbids discrimination based on gender in hiring, is allegedly violated by this practice. In order to look into the claims, the Tamil Nadu Labour Department was asked to provide a comprehensive report by the Ministry of Labour and Employment. They also instructed the Regional Chief Labour Commissioner to provide a report regarding the state of affairs. The matter was brought to light by media reporting, which prompted these actions.
