To commemorate the heritage of the Chicago labour movement and address current worker rights issues, labour organisations in Udaipur organised a rally on International Labour Day under the auspices of the Joint Coordination Committee of Labour Organisations. Rajesh Singhvi, the Convener of CITU District, commended the Chicago martyrs for achieving the eight-hour workday, while P S Khinchi condemned the labour reforms implemented by the Modi government for giving preference to capitalists over labourers. Gender discrimination and the need for legislative rights for female labourers were brought to light by Rekha Bhatnagar. Key demands included the removal of new labour laws, protection for drivers, a minimum salary of Rs. 26,000, a pension of Rs. 10,000 per month, the termination of the contract system, equitable pricing for agricultural products, farmer loan waivers and pensions, higher wages, and opposition to privatisation. |
