The People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) approached the Calcutta High Court seeking a court-monitored investigation into the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital. PUCL's plea called for a compliance report from the West Bengal government regarding the implementation of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH). The petition emphasized the need for institutional accountability. A division bench, comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya, heard multiple pleas, including one from the victim's parents requesting the investigation's transfer to an independent agency. The court is considering these petitions in light of the serious allegations and the need for transparency in handling the case.
