By revising the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA), the Union government stated on September 27, 2024, that workers' minimum salary rates would increase to ₹1,035 per day. "This adjustment aims to help workers manage the rising cost of living," the Labour Ministry said. The updated rates will pay semi-skilled workers in area 'A' ₹868 per day (₹22,568 per month) and unskilled workers ₹783 per day (₹20,358 per month). Clerical and skilled workers, as well as armed guard and ward staff, will make ₹954 per day, or ₹24,804 per month. The rate for highly skilled personnel and armed watch and ward staff will be ₹1,035 per day, or ₹26,910 per month. The ministry explained that the final revision would take place in April 2024, and the new tariffs would take effect on October 1, 2024. The minimum wage is classified by geographic region (designated A, B, and C) and skill level (unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled). Based on the six-month average of the Consumer Price Index for industrial workers, the adjustment takes place every two years and is especially helpful for workers in unorganised industries including construction, housekeeping, agriculture, and mining.
