The Indian government has been working on a new Labour Welfare and Employment Index (LWEl) expected to be launched in July 2024. This index will rank states based on factors like labor welfare, employment rates, social security coverage, and productivity. The aim is to create "healthy competition" among states, ultimately leading to more uniform implementation of labor laws and consistent employment policies across the country. This will benefit businesses operating in multiple states by simplifying compliance requirements.
