The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Ekta Ugrahan began collecting data on farmer suicides from its units in approximately 1,500 villages across Punjab, accusing successive state governments of neglecting these deaths for many years. Although the data collection covers only about 10% of Punjab's 13,000 villages, the organization aims to use this sample to urge the government to address the broader issue. Despite three universities in Punjab conducting a comprehensive survey from 2000 to 2015, which documented 16,606 suicides among farmers and laborers over 16 years, the BKU claims that compensation for these deaths has not been paid since 2010.
