Empower youth for a sustainable future

On International Youth Day, ILO Director-General Gilbert F. Houngbo, said that young people need to be equipped with skills for the green economy, so they can find decent jobs and make the world a better place for people and planet.

He acknowledged the commitment and actions of young people who were trying to make the world a better place, and urged the global community to celebrate their contributions. In particular, he mentioned careers which have a positive impact on the environment and foster social justice.

As per him, this moment of transition is itself an opportunity since it would create more than eight million additional jobs for young people by 2030. To avail the same, the youth need to be equipped with skills, including digital skills, to help them prepare for these jobs.

In that direction, the ILO-led Global Initiative on Decent Jobs for Youth has been a positive development. It works for and with the youth in ensuring that they are prepared for the future. It brings together the resources and expertise of multiple partners committed to scaling up actions that will increase youth employment.

The Director General urged the global community to join the efforts in building a more sustainable future for the generations to come.
