Following successful mediation negotiations assisted by the Tamil Nadu government, the Samsung India Workers' Union (SIWU), supported by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), declared the end of its strike at Samsung's Sriperumbudur plant. The workers' demands for more pay, less hours, and official union recognition led to the start of the strike on September 9, 2024. Several rounds of talks with Samsung's management and union representatives resulted from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin's directive for the Labour Welfare, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, and Industries departments to mediate. Final negotiations conducted by Labour Welfare authorities ended on October 15 with a mutually agreeable accord. The resolution stipulated that striking employees would return to work right away and that they would not face any retaliation for taking part in the walkout. The agreement said, "Workers will fully cooperate with management and avoid actions detrimental to the company's interests." Additionally, Samsung's management committed to responding in writing to the demands of the workers, with a conciliation officer supervising the process. With workers calling off the strike and pledging to work cooperatively with management, the Tamil Nadu government's intervention was essential in achieving a just conclusion. |
