Amazon faces Indian court scrutiny for labour conditions at warehouse

Amazon faced legal scrutiny in India for alleged labor law violations at its Manesar warehouse near Delhi. A labor inspection report revealed inadequate safety gear, non-compliance with regulations, and exploitative work conditions. Workers were pressured to meet strict hourly targets and discouraged from taking breaks. An incident in May involved a manager coercing workers to pledge against breaks, leading to disciplinary action. Workers reported monitoring through the ADAPT system, which flagged underperformance and risked job termination. Female workers lacked appropriate clothing near machinery, posing safety risks. The Haryana government submitted evidence in court, with the next hearing set for December. Amazon defended its practices, stating targets were achievable and working conditions competitive. Workers demanded fair treatment and abolition of excessive monitoring.
