Production Or Distribution Of Fuel Gases Notified As Public Utility Service

The Ministry of Labour and Employment through its notification no. S.O. 4879(E), in the exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (vi) of clause (n) of section 2 of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, declared that the services engaged in the ‘processing or production or distribution of fuel gases (coal gas, natural gas and the like)’ to be a public utility service for the purposes of the mentioned act, for a period of sic months with effect from the date of publication of this notification i.e., November 9, 2023. Section 2(n) of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 defines Public Utility Service as any railway service; any service in, or in connection with the working of, any major port; any section of the industrial establishment on the working of which the safety of the establishment depends; postal, telegraph or telephone service; industry which supplies light, power, or water to public; any system of public conservancy or sanitation; or any other industry as specified by the appropriate Government for a period not exceeding 6 months.
