Extension of ESIC Scheme to the Casual/Contractual Workers Under Municipal Corporations/Municipal Bodies Under the Control of State Government/UT Administration

The Maharashtra government released a notification on July 27, 2023, which expanded the scope of the Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Scheme to cover casual and contractual workers employed by municipal bodies. These bodies include Municipal Corporation (Nagar Nigam), Municipal councils, Nagar Palika, and other Urban Local Bodies under the authority of the Maharashtra State Government, wherein ten or more individuals are employed or have been employed on casual or contractual or combined basis and have received at any point during the preceding twelve months. According to section 1(5) of the ESI Act, 1948, this coverage extension will take effect on August 1, 2023.
