The Employees' State Insurance Corporation's Atal Beemit Vyakti Kalyan Yojana has been extended for an extra two years, ending on June 30, 2024. The extension has come up with a relaxed eligibility conditions and enhanced rate of relief. This is the third extension for the plan; the other two were approved in 2020 and 2021. In 2018, the programme was first implemented as a pilot project with a two-year timeline. But due to the COVID outbreak and the subsequent lockdown, the government decided to prolong the unemployment programme past its original expiration date. This scheme serves as a welfare provision for an “employee” defined in Section 2(9) of the ESI Act, 1948, offering relief payments for up to a duration of 90 days, available once during their lifetime.
